Studio Art Foundations
Course Type: Core Visual Arts Sequence Year 1
This is an art studio course designed to provide students with the opportunity to study theories of art and learn art-specific techniques and modalities in the production of both a physical and digital portfolio. While students learn to use multiple mediums (charcoal, ink, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, and rubber block), they will also learn key vocabulary necessary to provide commentary and criticality to professional and peer artwork. Students will work independently and collaboratively to create pieces that expand outside of students’ comfort zones across multiple mediums.
Students will take trips to local art institutions to gain inspiration and hone critical thinking skills while addressing diverse perspectives on social issues. Students will develop visual literacy by being exposed to traditional and contemporary works of art. Students will be able to make connections within their own lives and the history of art and communicate their intentions and creative process through artist statements.
